Southern Aboriginal Corporation (SAC) has today welcomed the long overdue announcement of a redress scheme for Western Australian survivors of the Stolen Generations, made by Premier Roger Cook at the Reconciliation Week Breakfast in Boorloo/Perth.
The scheme will offer payments of up to $85,000 for survivors who were forcibly removed from their families as children prior to 1 July 1972, a critical acknowledgment of the trauma and pain inflicted on Aboriginal people, families and communities for generations.
SAC CEO, Asha Bhat, said the scheme is a significant and emotional milestone for many Stolen Generations survivors who have fought tirelessly to have their stories heard and respected:
While no amount of money can undo the deep hurt and disconnection caused by these shameful government policies, this redress scheme is an important step toward truth telling, recognition and healing.
SAC stands with our Elders, survivors and their families in honouring their strength and resilience, and we recognise their enduring connection to Country, identity and culture.
SAC noted that the government will work with Aboriginal organisations to support communications, scheme roll-out and planning for additional measures to assist the healing of the trauma for survivors.
Ms. Bhat urged survivors to register their contact details for updates about when the scheme is finalised and registrations open here: Stolen Generations Redress Scheme.
Ends.
